NEW DELHI: Unseeded Russian tennis player Anna Kalinskaya achieved a significant milestone in her career by securing a place in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Kalinskaya, ranked 75th in the world, delivered an impressive straight-sets victory over 26th-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini at the Australian Open.
In a convincing performance on John Cain Arena, Kalinskaya defeated Paolini with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2.
The 23-year-old Russian showcased her skills and determination as she outplayed her opponent, setting the stage for a historic Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance.
Kalinskaya had faced early exits in her previous four appearances at the Australian Open, having never progressed beyond the first round. Her breakthrough performance in Melbourne adds a new chapter to her tennis journey.
Reflecting on her achievement, Kalinskaya expressed her joy, stating, “It feels amazing to pass so many rounds at a Grand Slam. It’s something special for me.”
The Russian player, who dealt with leg injuries last year that sidelined her for nearly four months, highlighted her fighting spirit and positive mindset.
The unseeded Russian will now await the winner between Chinese 12th seed Zheng Qinwen and unseeded Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin for her quarterfinal match.
