Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth says Wanderers deserve credit for taking their chances following their 3-0 victory at the UniBol.
Kyle Dempsey bagged a brace for the Whites either side of half-time, with Aaron Morley also getting on the scoresheet.
The Chairboys went close on the half-hour mark when Lewis Wing’s low drive cannoned off the woodwork, and Ainsworth was left ruing missed chances.
“I set them up tactically in the first half a different way. I actually thought we created some good chances first half and if we stick it in, it’s an even game,” he said.
“But Bolton took their chances. We had four good chances and they had four good chances, but they stuck two away and we didn’t – that was the tale of the first half.
“I changed it second half back to something more familiar and thought we did really well. I thought for the first 20 minutes, we were the aggressors.
“But then the breakaway goal really kills us and bursts our bubble because 3-0 is difficult – 2-0 you’ve always got a chance.”
Wycombe narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship last term, losing out against Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley.
When asked if Wanderers will be contenders this season, Ainsworth added: “It’s difficult to say after two games but they have had two really good results.
“They have got some evidence to say that they have recruited really well. Ian is a good guy and a good manager.
“It is a big club to manage and I think that the expectation here is get back to that Championship and Premier League as soon as they can.
“But it’s not that easy – it’s a tough, tough league this season. But they were definitely better than us today.”
