ALPENA — Seniors will have a day full of health and fitness tips on Wednesday at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center 501 River Street.
The senior center has partnered with MyMichigan Health’s Community Education Department and other local specialists and educators to present a Senior Health and Fitness Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, which is National Senior Health and Fitness Day.
The senior center is hosting the program for the first time this year.
“I’ve always wanted to do it in the past, so this year, we’re doing it,” said BJ Sander, Alpena Senior Citizens Center program manager.
Sander heads up senior exercise at 10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, and she said many seniors have seen great results from participating in that class.
She added that regular exercise can improve balance, overall physical health, mental health, and the group classes provide a social opportunity.
“This is a way of giving back to them for being committed to their health,” Sander said of her exercise class participants.
The free event is open to any interested seniors.
Vendor booths will be presented by Alcona Health Center, Alpena Fire Department, Catholic Human Services, Healogics, Kindred, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan State University Extension, MyMichigan Health, Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency, Thunder Bay Fyzical Therapy, Thunder Bay Transportation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Presentations include Nutrition at 12:30 p.m., Preventing Heat-Related Illness at 12:45 p.m., Spiritual Care and Loneliness at 1 p.m., Osteoporosis and Diet at 1:15 p.m., Osteoporosis and Treatment Options at 1:30 p.m., Inpatient Rehabilitation Services at 1:45 p.m., Fall Risk Prevention at 2 p.m., Senior Programs at 2:15 p.m., and Overview of Physical Therapy at 2:30 p.m.
