Carolina has won and covered in three of the last four head-to-head meetings against New Orleans, including a season sweep a year ago. But with the Panthers breaking in a new coach (Frank Reich) and rookie quarterback (No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young), the Saints are a 3-point road favorite.
Each team’s Week 1 results helped shape the spread as well.
With new QB Derek Carr throwing for 305 yards and a touchdown, the Saints outlasted the visiting Tennessee Titans 16-15 last Sunday.
Meanwhile, in Atlanta, Young was intercepted twice, and the Carolina defense was gashed for 130 yards and two TDs on the ground in a 24-10 loss to the Falcons.
Look for New Orleans’ defense to be the difference Monday night.
In Week 1, the Saints flustered 12th-year veteran QB Ryan Tannehill with a trio of interceptions while limiting him to a .470 completion percentage.
Young certainly has more potential with his Alabama championship pedigree. But this is only pro start No. 2 for the 22-year-old who can’t expect much help from his battered offensive line already missing its two starting guards from a season ago.
The Carolina secondary also is short-handed without injured top cornerback Jaycee Horn, and that’s less than ideal facing Carr and his potent trio of wideouts in Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, and Rashid Shaheed.
Last season with the Detroit Lions, Williams finished second in the league with 17 TDs — all coming on the ground.
With Alvin Kamara currently serving a discipline suspension, Williams is the Saints’ lead running back. He paced the team with 20 touches in the opener but failed to get into the end zone against the Titans’ formidable defensive front.
Look for that to change Monday against a Panthers defense that was just run over by the Falcons in Week 1.
