There’s a bumper 10-race bonanza taking place in front of the ITV cameras on Saturday afternoon as action takes place at Haydock Park, York and Goodwood, as well as a bonus race in the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. Our man Steve Chambers has been handed the task of trying to find some winners on the terrestrial action and he has four tips to follow…

Three wins from three has seen the John & Thady Gosden-trained FRANCESCO CLEMENTE launch into the upper echelons of the Flat racing sphere and the Dubawi colt will make his hotly-anticipated return to the track on Saturday in the Listed William Hill Festival Stakes at Goodwood at 13:30. A runaway nine-length winner in a Newmarket handicap last July, the Gosden raider will look to make it four from four here and is a warm order to strike and looks the class act in the race.
He holds some attractive entries with the standout being the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot next month, and if he can win this impressively then he could well book his place at the Royal meeting next month. Holding Hardwicke Stakes and Coral-Eclipse entries, Francesco Clemente is certainly held in high regard and he can duly book his spot in Group company next time by outclassing the likes of Phantom Flight and El Drama, who look the main dangers here.

It could be a very profitable day for the Gosden team as they will have a plethora of strong performers across the UK, but one that catches the eye at Haydock is the warm favourite COVEY, who lines up in the 14:25 race and is a colt going in search of a third win on the bounce. The son of Frankel is around a 9/4 chance, at the time of writing, and has sparkled on the track so far as having been narrowly beaten on debut he then went and bagged wins at Newmarket and Newcastle and lines up here of a mark of 90.
He will certainly have to improve now taking on classier rivals and the likes of Gincident and Royal Cape look notable adversaries, but Covey could still be comfortably ahead of the handicapper and the Gosden team could have their sights set on black-type contest later in the season. He will step up from seven furlongs to a mile here, but that shouldn’t be a real issue as he hasn’t been stopping at the line over shorter distances and he could even improve for the step up in distance.

Aidan O’Brien will bid for a first Sandy Lane Stakes victory on Saturday as he unleashes the top class three-year-old Little Big Bear, who was last seen finishing down the field in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. The Windsor Castle Stakes winner ended last season with a Group 1 win in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh and a return to six furlongs should see him back to his best here, but he was disappointing last time out, so has to bounce back.
One that could be a lively rival is the Archie Watson-trained BRADSELL, who stormed into the limelight last summer with a sparkling Group 2 win in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and he can replicate that performance here. He tired in the closing stages of the Commonwealth Cup trial at Ascot on his seasonal reappearance – when beaten by Cold Case – and that pair lock horns again here, but Bradsell can reverse that form here and duly return to winning ways and enhance his reputation as a top notch sprinter.

Henry Candy’s TWILIGHT CALLS made no sort of mark on his return to the track at Newmarket in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes as the five-year-old finished ninth, but he should improve for his first outing in nearly a year and looks the one to beat in a hugely competitive renewal of the Temple Stakes at Haydock at 15:30.
He ran an absolute stormer in defeat in this race 12 months ago as he was just edged out by King’s Lynn before he went on and finished a sparkling runner-up in the King’s Stand Stakes behind Australian sprint sensation Nature Strip. That is really top class form, so if Candy can get him to improve significantly for his first run then he has to be given a huge chance. The likes of proven Group performers The Platinum Queen and Dramatised have to be given the utmost respect and will certainly be prominent figures through the early stages, but off a fierce gallop it’s Twilight Calls that can bound to the win on Saturday afternoon.
